Workouts that burn 300 calories

Are your pants a little snug from the over-indulgence during this holiday season? Is your couch molding to your butt? Well, put down the bagel and step away from the pumpkin pie. Pause before you order that peppermint grande mocha. Why wait for January 1st to start the exercise program; let’s get out there and do something today. The following workouts will burn 300 calories = one bagel (no cream cheese), that slice of pie or the mocha drink.

Boxing on a punching bag: Grab the gloves to protect those knuckles and start pounding on the bag. You’ll have to keep it up for 50 minutes. Believe me, that’s a long time. You’ll have noodle arms after this workout.

Calisthenics: Squats, pushups, chin-ups, crunches here we come. After 1 hour, 35 minutes, your bagel will be null and void.

Circuit training: Cross fit athletes know the secret to burning it up in and out of the gym. They will only have to spend 35 minutes to burn 300 calories.

Dancing: You will have to cha-cha-cha it for 40 minutes.

Elliptical: Watch a 30 minute tv show while striding along.

Fencing: My best friend wants to try fencing this coming year. She and her sabre will have to stand and thrust for 55 minutes.

Hiking: My favorite activity in the wilderness. Find a trail and spend an hour on the mountain. Awe.

Ice Skating, Luge, Sledding or XC Skiing: These great outdoor winter sports will each eat up 300 calories in 45 minutes. Score!!

Swimming (vigorous freestyle), Running (5 mph, 12 min. mile) or Orienteering: A quick 30 minutes will get you in and out of your workout clothes. If I’m exercising, I like a bang for my buck. Work hard in less time.

Walking (3 mph, moderate) or Pilates: Both exercises are excellent for the core, but unfortunately, you’ll have to spend 2 hours to burn up 300 calories.

Will you try something new this coming year? I’m going to add Jujitsu and Judo to my workouts. I’ll keep you posted on how that goes.
